Medical College Representatives: Mr. Earl Ellis, State Personnel Officer Mr* William D. Huff, Director of Development Mr. Charles Fennessy, Personnel Officer Mr. Don Lindsey, Asst. Personnel Officer Dr. Harrison L. Peeples, Trustee Mr. June 0, Yarborough, Trustee Mr. J. Edwin Schachte,Jr., Trustee Worker's Representatives: Miss Mary Ann Moultrie Mr. Jack Bradford Mrs. Martha Alston Miss (or Mrs.) Ernestine Bryant Mr. Jack Coaxum Attorney Fred Henderson Moore Mr. William Saunders The meeting was held pursuant to an earlier conference between Governor McNair and Mr. Saunders and a letter advice which had been forwarded to the Trustees. With the exception of Mr. Saunders, the workers group consisted of those individuals who were to have participated in the aborted meeting of May 8th. Mr. Saunders is a resident of John's Island, a leader of the Black Community and a member of the Charleston Community Relations group. He is also an adviser to the workers and attended the meeting as such. Except for a satisfactorily explained change in the time schedule, the meeting convened under the precise conditions as previously agreed. Mr. Schachte made a brief introductory statement and turned the meeting over to Mr. Moore who acted as principal spokesman for the workers. The agenda presented by Mr. Moore was practically the same as that suggested for the May 8th meeting and included questions, answers and discussions of the several issues. The first issues presented by Mr. Moore were Wages and Fringe Benefits and Grievance procedures. Mr. Schachte referred these to Mr. Ellis who related the effects of the new State Employee classification and wage system proposed for a July 1,1969 effective date with a minimum wage of $1.60 per hour. Mr. Ellis explained this proposal at some length answering several questions which were raised. He also spoke to the question of improvement in the Grievance procedures at the Medical College. No precise program was indicated, but the several possibilities for improvement discussed and a pledge of good faith in this direction made by the College representatives to the workers. It was indicated that any inclusion of an elected committee of the workers would most probably not be acceptable, but several alternatives suggested.
