3 FIRST DRAFT I On March 14, 1969, app. 4 p.m. I was notified by the Administrator's Office to notify individuals in Nursing Service of a meeting with Dr. McCord on March 17th, in the 2 West Classroom regarding grievances. My secretary and I notified these Individuals of the meeting that was scheduled. Some I was not able to contact, but was told that they were posted to be on duty at 7 A.M. the following morning (March 17th). On March 17, 1969, I re-notified these individuals of the meeting at 10 A.M. and shortly before 10 A.M., Mrs. Welbome, Secretary to the Hospital Administrator, called to notify me that the meeting had been postponed' until 11 A.M. My secretary and I notified the individuals' units that the meeting had been postponed and to notify the individuals that had been requested to attend. At approximately 10 minutes after 10 A.M., Miss Donahue, Secretary in Nursing Service Office, notified me that all of the Nursing Service employees that we had notified to attend the meeting were in the 2 West Classroom with a number of ether people. Miss Donahue had come to the 2 West Classroom at approximately 5 minutes after 10 because she felt that some had not been notified that the meeting had been postponed-. She made the announcement to the entire group that the meeting had been postponed until 11 A.M. She came directly from the Classroom to me to notify that none of the individuals present had left the Classroom. There was general laughing and talking. I immediately notified Mr. Porter of the large number of people in the Classroom and that someone from the Administrator's Office should go and direct these individuals to return to their units. Mr. Porter did go to the Classroom and make this announcement at my request. All of the employees on the 7th floor except those on 7 East left their Nursing Unit for 2 hours leaving a staff consisting of a Head Nurse and One Ward Secretary to take care of 32 patients and of those 32 patients, seven! were critical. On 7 Center, lefttheir unit , and were left to take care of 30 patients. On 7 West left their Unit, and were left to take care of 27 patients. -TYPES OF PATIENTS ON UNITS CONCERNED The Seventh Floor accepts patients which are special surgery and rehabilitation type patients which I will break down into types of patients on individual units. 7 West Eye, Nose, and Throat and Rehabilitation patients—The majority of patients consisted of eye patients and ENT patients such as cataracts, patients with glaucoma, retina detachment, nosebleeds, ear surgery and cancer of the larynx. 7 Center Orthopedic Patients—GYN patients, and GU patients—These consist of patients who have had hysterectomy operations, prolapse of the uterus, cancer of the cervix, radical vulvectomy, amputation of the left leg, broken legs, broken hips, and a patient who had a dead right kidney removed. 7East 32 patients consisting of neurology and neurosurgery patients— One-patient suffered from cancerous tumor of the spinal cord, blood clot to the lung, and paralysis of the lower part of her body. One patient had a cerebral aneurysm. There were patients with broken necks, patient who had a paralys'ed left side of his body and another with meningitis and a patient who had an aneurysm which had ruptured. We had many other patients on that unit who ihad possible brain tumors, abscesses of the spinal cord and patients who were having seizures. One patient suffered from myastenia gravis (general muscle weakness)
