The Board convened Thursday, October 10, 1991 with the
following members present: Dr. Thomas C. Rowland, Jr.,
Chairman; Mr. Melvyn Berlinsky, Vice Chairman; Dr. Stanley C.
Baker, Jr., Dr. Carroll V. Bing, Jr., Dr. Cotesworth P.
Fishburne, Jr., Mr. Herbert C. Granger, The Hon. Robert C.
Lake, Jr., Mr. Jack F. Mcintosh, Dr. E. Conyers O'Bryan, Jr.,
Mrs. Claudia W. Peeples, Dr. Harrison L. Peeples, Mr. Allan E.
Stalvey, and Mr. Hugh B. Faulkner, III, Secretary.
The following administrative officers were present: Dr. James
B. Edwards, President; Mr. Stephen L. Jones, Executive
Assistant to the President; Dr. W. Marcus Newberry, Vice
President for Academic Affairs and Provost; Ms. Charlene G.
McCants, Vice President for Finance and Administration; Dr.
Peter J. Fischinger, Vice President for Research; and Dr.
Layton McCurdy, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of
the College of Medicine.
The following deans were present: Dr. Gilbert B. Bradham, Dean
of Student Life; Dr. Rosalie Crouch, College of Graduate
Studies; Dr. William H. Golod, College of Pharmacy; Dr. Sharon
Hoffman, College of Nursing; Dr. John Johnson, College of
Health Related Professions; and Dr. Layton McCurdy, College of
Medicine. (Dr. Walter Fingar, College of Dental Medicine,
attended the retreat on Friday and Saturday and discussed Item
7 of these minutes at the conclusion of the retreat on
Saturday, October 12, 1991).

Call to Order—Roll Call
There being a quorum present, Dr. Thomas C. Rowland,
Jr. called the meeting to order. Dr. Cotesworth
Fishburne gave the invocation. Ms. Liz Castle called
the roil.
Item 2. Secretary to Report Date of Next Meeting.
The date of the next regularly scheduled meeting is
Friday, December 13, 1991 with committee meetings
scheduled for Thursday, December 12th and Friday,
December 13, 1991.
