Note	James Marion Sims was born January 25, 1813, in Hanging Rock near Lancaster, South Carolina. After attending Lancaster schools he graduated from the South Carolina College in 1832. He attended the Medical College of South Carolina for one semester before leaving to complete his medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1855. He briefly returned to Lancaster after graduation but moved to Alabama in October 1835, finally settling in Montgomery. He practiced general medicine for several years before becoming interested in the vesicovaginal fistula caused by the act of childbirth. He made his name as a surgeon by practicing techniques and inventing instruments, including silver wire sutures, aimed at repairing this damage. He moved to New York City, in part for health reasons, and soon established his practice there. He was instrumental in the establishment of the nation's first hospital for women in 1853. In addition to diseases of women, Sims was interested in cancer and worked to establish the New York Cancer Hospital (now the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital). Sims died in New York on November 13, 1883. The following collection has been merged with MSS 52: MSS 136, Letters, 1858-1859 to Waddy Thompson.
Transcript	79 Madison Ave. New-York. July 26th, 1858, My Dear Genl. Your kind note was duly said & so was the... 200 in full for prof.... Miss Jones. I did not know that my young man (Dr. Scudder) had sent the a/c tile the money or rather your letter around. But I am not satisfied about Miss Jones' case-I would like to cure her if she will come when she can best spare the time and let me make a permanent cure. I am delighted to hear that... is so well. We have rc'd from Brady the pictures. They are elegant likenesss and, as specimens of art, magnificent. He promised to have mine ready, but I put an injunction on his sending it off.... I could see it-for he had furnished up a milk and water sort of picture I have determined shall not go to my naturic state. The other must be done by this time & I will try and get to his gallery tomorrow. It is my fault that the picture was not sent long ago but it shall not be chargeable to me longer.
