The Committee appointed to confer with Dr. J. W. Schmidt on the subject of the reports in circulation, affirming his son Dr. J. W. Schmidt Junr to be of coloured descent--beg leave to report that they have met his attorney Mr. James L. Petigru on the subject, and have obtained such documents as hi (Mr. Petigru) thought proper to produce at this time, and which they now lay before the Society--your committee think it unnecessary to make any comments on the documents refered to, they speak for themselves, and the Society can Judge of their value-- Charleston May 2, 1831 F. The second item, dated May 2, 1831 is the cover letter produced to attend documents acquired by the Society from Dr. Schmidt's attorney James L. Petigru in regard to the allegations that Dr. Schmidt was "of mixed race." |
