Federal funds might be available for expansion of new Roper Hospital under new public law #139 which grants funds to hospitals in critical defense areas. In another report Dr. Wilson announced to the society that Mr. Alec Robb superintendant of the hospital had received a few hours before the meeting, a letter from the State Health Officer in which it was indicated that federal funds might be available for the expansion program under public law 139 which permitted grants to health and hospital facilities in critical defense areas. These funds were separate from those available under the Hill-Burton Act. If the Medical society shows interest in obtaining such funds. it was necessary for the superintendent of the hospital to fill out a special questionnaire to be returned at once to the State Board of Health of South Carolina. Dr. Bachman S. Smith moved and it was seconded from the floor, "That the superintendent be authorized to fill out the questionnaire and to return it to the State Board of Health." This motion was passed unanimously. In answering questions concerning the availability of those funds Dr. Wilson indicated that the exact amount available was not known but that the sum might be in the neighborhood of two or three hundred thousand dollars. Officers of society to consider investing surplus funds in checking acct. of society. Dr. Arthur L. Rivers was then recognized and made note of the surplus funds now available in the checking account or the Medical Society and moved that, the officers of the society consider investing any surplus funds not needed for immediate operating expenses. This motion was seconded and passed unanimously by the society after brief discussion. There being no further business the president announced that the next meeting of the society would be held Thursday. Nov 12, 1960.
