Business Meeting of the Medical Society of S. C. Tuesday, January 9, 1951 at 8:00 P. M. at Roper Hospital The meeting was called to order by the President, Dr. G. McF. Mood. Roll Call The following members were present: Banov, Jr., Berry, Bowers, Brown, Buist, Cain, J. E. Cannon, H. W. desaussure, Evatt, Gazes, Hanckel, K. H. Herbert, Hope Kane, Kredel, (45) Linton, McKee, McKee, Maguire, Jr., J. H. Marshall, Mayo, Mood, Sr., Moseley, Parker, Robert Pringle, Prioleau, J. J. Ravenel, Reynolds, G. P. Richards, Rivers, Robertson, Siegling, B. S. Smith, C. C. Smith, Speissegger, Sughrue, J. F. Townsend, Waring, I. R. Wilson, Robert Wilson, Izard, Hester, C. deSaussure, Lynch, Jr. and Bates. Mr. M. L. Meadors was the only guest present. M.L.Meadors Mr. Meadors spoke on the business of the South Carolina Medical Association. He said the total number of members was 1176. Of these 1002 have paid their 1950 business state dues. There are 112 honorary members of the State Association (members 40 of the S. C. years or more), this leaves 61 unpaid in 1950. About 285 have not paid their A. M. A. Medical dues. Each 1000 members or part thereof represents one delegate to the A. M. A. Assn. convention. Therefore S. C. now has two. To maintain this all should pay A. M. A. dues. He also stated that the State treasury was in good condition with $17,000.00 cash on hand. Mr. Meadors mentioned an address by Mr. Hutchinson, President of the Joiner's Union, who expressed opposition to medicine as practiced in England and Socialized medicine in general. He mentioned that response to the A. M. A. advertising was varied. He also stated that a film had been purchased by the State Medical Association from the Michigan State Medical College entitled "To Your Health" for $1000.0O. It points up the free practice as opposed to Socialized medicine. Mr. Meadors also said that a State Grievance Committee which will give the medical profession an opportunity to investigate grievances of the public in regards medicine was to be brought up at the State Meeting in May. He also announced that auto emblems were now available for members who desired them. minutes aprvd. The minutes from December 19, 1950 were read and approved. Report of the Dr. Robert M. Hope, Secretary of the Board of Finance read excerpts from the Bd. of Finance annual report. Questions were asked as follows and answered by Dr. Hope. 1. Dr. A. J. Buist, Jr. - What percentage is invested in Bonds, Investment funds and common stocks? Answer - Exact division not definitely known. 2. Dr. R. W. Hanckel - Why is it necessary that $7,000.00 be left as a cash balance? - Answer - It is necessary for payment for the audit, binding of books and other incidental expenses, 1/9/51 -i-
