Description | Terry L. Kunkle, DMD, was a student in the first graduating class of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM), 1971. During his interview Dr. Kunkle covers a variety of topics, beginning with his education and how he became interested in dentistry. He recalls his experiences as a student, specifically the lectures and laboratory work, the faculty and their teaching styles, and his classmates. He discusses Dr. John Buhler, the school’s first dean. He describes Dr. Buhler’s personality, his administrative style, his interactions with students, and his lasting impact on the college. Additionally, Dr. Kunkle discusses his thoughts on dental education in the state, the political aspect of dentistry, and the roles of the South Carolina Dental Association and the Charleston Dental Society in shaping state dentistry. Dr. Kunkle discusses the changes in dental education since 1967, the growth of the CDM, and the dental profession in South Carolina. |
