Description	Dr. Laurie L. Brown, M.D., conducted this oral history interview at the Medical University of South Carolina on October 9, 1992. In this interview, Dr. Thomas C. Rowland, Jr., M.D., discusses his family, educational background, medical practice, and service in organized medicine, particularly as president of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) from 1988 to 1989. Rowland also speaks in greater detail about the issues facing the medical profession at the time of his tenure as SCMA president, which included: tort reform, medical malpractice, the emergence of the registered care technician, Medicaid, Medicare, and the role of the organization in establishing the Personal Care Plan and the Health Education Van.

Biographical Note	Thomas C. Rowland, Jr. was born in Georgia and raised in Laurens County, South Carolina. He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a degree in medicine from the Medical College of South Carolina. Rowland completed an internship at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina, and upon serving in the United States Navy, he completed his residency and service in obstetrics and gynecology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and Camp Lejeune. Upon completion of his training in Maryland, Dr. Rowland based his practice in Columbia, South Carolina. After serving as president of the Medical Care Foundation, Dr. Rowland eventually served as treasurer and president of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) from 1988 to 1989. At the time of this interview, Dr. Rowland was serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees for MUSC. Rowland was married and had two children.
