Abstract	A patient flow study in the Pediatric Outpatient Teaching Clinic at the Medical University of South Carolina demonstrates (1) the effectiveness of a clinic self-evaluation manual in the planning and implementation of the study, (2) the use and validity of a management information system for the storage, retrieval, and processing of demographic, socioeconomic, and patient flow data , and (3) the derivation of patient flow statistics and distributions based upon which recommendations can be made to improve clinic performance. The study not only describes the flow of patients, but also identifies problem areas which create delays, idle time, and excessive waiting within a clinic.
