Abstract	Marion Laboratories, Inc., Kansas City, Mo., has recently developed a urine screening instrument, the Bacteria Detection Device (BDD). The BDD is designed to screen clean catch urine specimens in approximately 2 minutes by trapping microorganisms on a specially designed filter-pad and then staining with safranin O. The color intensity of the filter is compared to a color chart to enable one to rank the intensity as 0 or negative for no color; +/- for very slight pink color; 1+; 2+; 3+; 4+. A comparison was done on 515 clean catch urines using the BDD and our conventional plating procedure. All urines after plating were filtered through the BDD and color intensity of the filter pad recorded at this time. Of the 515 urines, 275 had colony counts of <10[superscript 4] cfu/ml but only 137 (50%) were negative by BDD. The remaining 138 were positive at +/- or greater. In this group, 12 patients were on antibiotic therapy prior to urine collection. There were 240 urines with colony counts of >I0[superscript 4] cfu per ml. and of these, the BDD was negative on only 16, and only 3 of these were negative by the BDD when colony counts were >10[superscript 5] cfu/ml. From our results it is felt that the BDD is a reliable, sensitive and easy technique that can be used to screen clean catch urine specimens for microorganisms.
