Abstract	The facial nucleus in the opossum is dumbbell-shaped in frontal sections and consists of six morphological subdivisions. Each subdivision innervates different muscles of facial expression. The neurons supplying the buccolabial muscles lie within the lateral subdivision (lobe). The zygomatic neurons are located within the ventromedial one-third of the lateral lobe. The caudal auricular and cervical muscles are innervated respectively by neurons contained within the dorsomedial and ventromedial subdivisions of the medial lobe. Neurons innervating the palpebral and rostral auricular musculature are situated within the ventrolateral two-thirds of the medial lobe. Finally, the posterior belly of the digastric muscle is supplied by neurons found within a U-shaped dorsal region of the isthmus and extending dorsally from the medial portion of this region into the accessory facial nucleus. This study indicates that the basic mammalian pattern of subdivisional representation of the motor nucleus of VII is applicable to the opossum.
