Abstract	Studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of severe chronic hyponatremia on CSF ionic regulation and the control of breathing in the anesthetized dog. Hyponatremia was produced with 5 U/day-of vasopressin and water. Five-day volume expansion in normal dogs reduced CSF sodium; -potassium and chloride by 19% and increased basal ventilation and CO2 sensitivity by 200%. Vasopressin administration in dogs with mild hyponatremia and alkalosis, the result of diuretic therapy, reduced CSF sodium, potassium and chloride by 10% and doubled minute ventilation and the ventilatory response to CO2. Near normal CSF/plasma distribution ratios and CSF pH were maintained in both experimental groups. The reduction in CSF electrolytes correlated closely with the level of elevation in CO2 sensitivity; the degree of regulation in absolute CSF electrolyte content appeared to be dependent on the type and length of hyponatremia.
