Abstract	The histologic technician is an important part of the health care team. She or he prepares tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist. Histologic technicians are registered through written and practical examination by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. However, there is no standard for the education or training of histologic technicians, a unique situation among health care professions. I surveyed the professionals in anatomic pathology throughout the state of South Carolina to evaluate their perceptions of the level of training perceived to be important for histologic technicians. Responses were evaluated as three groups: pathologists, laboratory managers and supervisors, chief and bench technicians. Also considered were four employment settings: private practice, medical centers, hospitals with more than 250 beds, and hospitals with 250 or fewer beds. It was concluded that statistically significant differences existed between all pairs of groups categorized according to profession. Statistically significant differences existed between all pairs of groups according to place of employment with the exception of hospitals with more than 250 beds and hospitals with 250 or fewer beds.
