Abstract	The effects of age, gender, and racial group on respiratory pattern; onset and duration ofrespiratory, pharyngeal, and laryngeal events; and apnea duration of single liquid swallows was studied in 40 healthy, normal volunteers. Individuals were divided into two groups: young (21-60 years) and old (61+ years). Participants self-administered two 5 mlliquid bolus trials of barium while a high resolution, dual modality videofluoroscopic and airflow recording device recorded respiratory and swallow data. Four respiratory phase patterns were identified for both groups. No significant differences were found between age, gender, or race.
