Abstract	This project was designed to test the hypothesis that essential fatty acids have a role in cutaneous wound healing in the rat and to investigate the ability of the skin to perform two of the metabolic steps necessary to convert linoleic acid to arachidonic acid (AA) in vitro. The pattern of cutaneous wound closure, as measured by serial photography, was significantly different in essential fatty acid deficient (EFAD) and nondeficient rats. Topical application of indomethacin (1M), a fatty acid cyclooxygenase inhibitor, to the skin of nondeficient rats prior to wounding and twice daily thereafter for five days resulted in a significant retardation of wound closureo The application of arachidonic acid (AA) to the wounds of essential fatty acid deficient rats resulted in a consistent improvement in the pattern of healing. The in vitro studies demonstrated a lack of fatty acid desaturating activity in the skin of nondeficient rats.
