Abstract	The purpose of this non-equivalent group comparative study was to determine the effectiveness of a specialty foam pad as an intervention to reduce the incidence of intraoperatively acquired pressure sores in cardiothoracic and major vascular surgical patients. A convenience sample (n = 361) was drawn from all inpatients who underwent cardiothoracic or major vascular surgery on the standard operating room table, the air-filled pad, or the specialty foam pad during the study period. Approximately 100 patients fell into each group. The incidence of pressure sore development was seven (6.5%) in the standard operating room table group, zero in the air-filled pad group, and one <1%) in the foam pad group. There was a statistically significant difference (p =.0003) between the combined intervention group (air-filled pad and foam pad) and the no intervention group (standard operating room table). The researcher concludes that the foam pad and the air-filled pad are effective interventions to reduce the incidence of intraoperatively acquired pressure sores.
