Description
Intended for a paper delivered by Manly Stallworth for Dr . Smithy . Black and white illustration includes two inset illustrations , magnifying a portion of the valvulotome instrument and its usage during the surgical procedure . "Schlossberg " appears in the bottom , right corner of the parent illustration . The caption , "Portion of anterior leaflet to be punched out " appears in the top , right corner , above the first inset illustration . "Instrument lodged against anterior leaflet " appears between the inset illustrations . "Cross-section " appears in the bottom , right corner , below the second inset illustration .

Caption , not shown , included with figure reads , "Figure 5 - Showing the valvulotome within the mitral valve . As the instrument is withdrawn , the cutting surfaces are opened and allowed to impinge on the anterior margin of the stenotic valve . Closure of the cutting surfaces causes excision of a portion of the valve which is held within the telescoping mechanism of the instrument. " Measurements and arrows appear along the perimeter of the illustration . "1699 " stamped , appears on the illustration verso . "Fig 5 " handwritten , appears on the cover page of the illustration .
