Description |
The film depicts an "open chest preparation." The chest is opened at the midline of the sternum. The subject is placed on a respirator and artificially ventilated. The lungs can be seen in the background expanding and contracting. The two rods placed in the heart muscle measure both the force of contraction and the heart rate. When the operator pulls up on the string attached to the rod, he is measuring indirectly the force of contraction. Notice, he is measuring the distance that he moves the string up the rod and records the distance moved. This in turn is translated into a force of contraction. Those 2 measurements are depicted on the graph. There are 3 drugs being tested; epinephrine, digitalis and EA-83. The 3 drugs were injected intravenously in a vein that is not seen in the film. All three drugs increased the force of contraction of the heart. Epinephrine and EA-83 also increased the heart rate. The graph of EA-83 shows the time course of the increase in contractile force that it produced. This reasearch was conducted by Dr. Robert Walton, Chair of the MCSSC Department of Pharmacology. Description provided by Dr. Perry Halushka, Dean of the MUSC College of Graduate Studies and former student of Dr. Robert Walton. |
